Y Golf Tournament Reaches 25-Year Milestone

If you play golf, the YMCA of South Collier wants you. If you don’t play, the Y wants you to chip in anyway.

The occasion is the 25th annual Y golf tournament, set for Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Money raised benefits the Y’s scholarship fund to support after school and summer programs for the needy children of East Naples, Everglades City and Marco Island.

As usual, there are plenty of extras associated with a day of golfing at one of the area’s premier resorts. They include breakfast, and lunch directly after the tournament.

Top foursomes win assorted prizes, while door prizes consist of rounds of golf, resort stays and equipment.

Long-serving event chair Jean Shaw says hole sponsorships at $145 (two for $245) are available, along with others that are available upon request from her at 239-248-4366.

For supporters who can’t make it on the day, donations are welcome by visiting the Y’s website at

CEO of the Y, Cindy Abounader-Love, says these donations will be put to great use.

“We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors,” she says.

“The scholarships ensure that families who cannot normally afford to have their children participate in programs, can have their children participate at little to no cost.”

The Y offers programs such as: sports, learn to swim, cheerleading, dance, certified babysitting and counselor in training, daycare/preschool, after-school programs at Tommie Barfield and Manatee Elementary schools and summer/holiday camp programs all year round.

Programs offered are not exclusive to Marco Island residents but are open to all residents in the surrounding area. Many who use these programs are children of families who service the Marco Island community.

Registration for the tournament is at 7 AM (8 AM shotgun start). Cost is $150 per player or $600 per foursome.

Signing up can also be done by visiting the website.
