The Coastal Breeze and Marco Island-based WVOI 98.1 FM have joined forces to bring broadcasts of local high school sports to fans.

WVOI will cover select football and basketball games of Lely High School and Marco Island Academy this school year, with sponsorship from Coastal Breeze.

“We are pleased to expand our school sports coverage in partnering with WVOI,” said Coastal Breeze Publisher Val Simon. “Certain games will be broadcast live and we will link to those broadcasts online ( It furthers our mission as a community newspaper. Go Trojans! Go Rays!”

The arrangement also calls for the Coastal Breeze to run advertising for the station, something WVOI co-owner Bob Ladd views as a plus.

“It gives us another outlet for advertising the station and letting people on the island know that we exist,” Ladd added. “It also provides an audio link in case people can’t pick up the station on the air. We’ll probably be exchanging information that is valuable to both of us, news stories, contacts, that type of thing.”

Ladd will handle play-by-play duties for football and basketball, and a second announcer will be added for the “color” portion of the broadcasts.

The formats of WVOI and its sister station, WVOI AM 1480, are “Marco-centric,” he said. “It’s Marco news and information.”

Local news is heard every hour from 6 AM to 12 PM, Monday through Friday. “We have a huge commitment to weather. We’re doing it twice an hour, the Marco and Naples forecast,” said Ladd. “We do the high-tide forecast early in the morning. On Saturday mornings between 7 and 9 AM, we have a fishing show with local sport fishing captains and marinas, and we also discuss boat shows that are happening.”

WVOI’s schedule also includes:

At 9 AM on Saturdays, “The Book Report,” a national show that also includes Ladd shining a light on Marco’s writers, with interviews and a breakdown of books from local authors released that week.

From 7 to 9 AM on Sundays, “Christian Countdown,” produced by Jim Channell of Naples, and playing the top 40 Christian songs for each week.

At 11 AM on Sundays is the weekly service from the Marco Lutheran Church.

From 9 to10 AM on weekdays is Collier County radio personality Bob Harden’s talk show.

The remaining airtime is dedicated to music.

“Our music format is what we call ‘Hot Adult Contemporary’” said Ladd. “It’s music from the 70s, a lot from the 80s and 90s.” J.J. Mitchell is the DJ on from 10 AM to 2 PM, while Steve Reynolds of Marco is at the mike from 2 to 6 PM, every day. Ladd is heard from 6 to 9 PM on weekdays, and Johnny Dark handles the 6 PM to midnight shift.

WVOI’s broadcasts are also streamed on and have attracted a national, as well as international, listening audience.

“We get about 40 percent of our listeners from overseas,” said Ladd, a Bonita Springs resident who shares ownership of the station with Kevin Schmidt of Naples. “They’re in Germany, the U.K. and the Scandinavian countries. We’re not sure what that means, but we’re guessing that it means that we have a large number of people who own property or visit here often who stay in touch by listening to the station.”
