Women in the Glades Talk: Local History From Coast to Coast

Imagine South Florida without air-conditioning and without roads or automobiles!

Local historian and author Marya Repko will give a free illustrated presentation about “Women the Everglades; Pioneers & Early Environmentalists” on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 3 PM at the Collier County Museum, Government Center, 3331 Tamiami Trail East, Naples.

Back in the 1880s it was difficult living and very lonely on both the east

and west coasts of the state. Besides the mosquitoes and the summer heat, women cooked on open fires and foraged for food. As the railroads approached this remote territory, life got easier so they became concerned about their natural surroundings and joined together to protect it from too much development.

The struggle continues to stop “paving paradise,” which was instigated by women many years ago who nurtured nature.
