Each boating organization on Marco Island has it’s own special appeal to the public, be it kayaking, fishing, sailing, cruising, boating education, etc. Members of one organization might like to participate in some of the activities held by another organization. We thought that this would be a good way for boating members to be introduced to other boating organizations on the island. After a delay by Hurricane Irma, we met in October 2017.
Representatives from the following organizations attended: Marco Bay Yacht Club, Marco Island Paddlers Association, Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron, Marco Island Yacht Club, Marco Sportfishing Club, Sailing Association of Marco Island, The United States Coast Guard – Auxiliary, and the Civil Air Patrol.
Later, the Police and Fire On-The-Water Divisions were asked to attend.
The mission of the group has been expanded to be become a united voice of concern to the city and county for safe boating in and around Marco Island.
At our February meeting infant, child, and youth life jackets were given to each attendee by the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron to emphasize the need for children to have a proper fitting life jacket when on the water.
The Wear IT! Event, during the National Safe Boating Week of May 19th – 25th, 2018, will allow all boaters on Marco Island the opportunity to support the use of life jackets on the water and safe boating.
Please join us on May 19 at 9:30 AM at the Marco Island Yacht Club, wearing your life jacket to show your support for safe boating.
The Marco Island Commanders Group meets quarterly except for summer.
