Too Quiet After Season Ends

Dear Coach,

Like the writer in the last issue, I too was overwhelmed with visitors and activities this season. However, now it’s too quiet. We live on Marco Island year-round and when so many friends leave for the summer, activities end, and even some restaurants close, I feel lost.

Any suggestions?

Lost in Paradise

Dear Lost,

I can understand your feelings. When our circumstances abruptly change, it’s difficult to adapt. It might take a few weeks.

In the meantime, I’d suggest you think about what you wished for when you were too busy. Did you wish for time to read, an hour for a quiet walk on the beach, an opportunity to swim in the pool without children splashing, time to pursue your favorite hobby? Sometimes when we live in “reaction world”—I need to get the sheets changed, what will I make for breakfast next week, what will the kids want to do, it’s difficult to get back to a “proactive” mind-set.

Just as you planned for visitors, plan your week during this quiet time. Fill it with important things like exercise and cooking healthy meals, then schedule some of the solitary or couple fun you might have missed when you were in entertainment or season-activity mode.

Enjoy the quiet. Next season will be here before you know it.
