The Physicians Regional-Marco Island Walk-In Clinic: Why wait?

B20-CBN-11-13-15-6As the CEO of Physicians Regional Healthcare System—and one who strongly believes in the importance of patient education—there’s one thing I have discovered over the years: people often know less about us than we’d like to think.

For example, take Physicians Regional-Marco Island. Ask one person and you’re likely hear it’s an “urgent care center” or “walk-in clinic.” Ask someone else and he or she may tell you it’s a “doctor’s office.” In fact, both statements are true.

However, Physicians Regional-Marco Island also offers physical therapy, rehab, lab and x-ray services.

Open to patients since February 11, 2013, Physicians Regional-Marco Island is a 9,000 square-foot facility located at The Shops of Marco at the corner of Barfield and San Marco Road.

Today, I want to focus on the “urgent care” or “walk-in clinic” side of the facility.

Led by Ohio-transplant Dr. Mary Anne Farris, the clinic is open 7 days a week, and is intended to address non-life threatening situations.

Though Physicians Regional-Marco Island has more equipment and resources available than a typical doctor’s office, the walk-in clinic should not be used as an “emergency room.” Always dial 9-1-1 when experiencing a true emergency such as crushing chest pain, slurred speech, sudden vision loss, rapid onset weakness, and/or significant difficulty breathing.

“If you can’t get an appointment with your primary care physician, that’s exactly why we are here,” explains Dr. Farris. “For example, my specialty is family medicine which covers everything from obstetrics to geriatrics.”

Essentially, our walk-in clinic offers patients the convenience of easy access to a primary care setting.

Dr. Farris adds: “The types of patients we see most often

are individuals with upper-respiratory or ear infections, urinary-tract infections, falls with broken bones, rashes, lacerations, nausea and abdominal or back pain.”

As Physicians Regional-Marco Island is part of Physicians Regional Healthcare System—which includes Physicians Regional Medical Group and our two hospital locations: one just north of Marco on Collier Boulevard and another on Pine Ridge Road—all visitors to the clinic ultimately have access to a host of board certified physicians covering a number of medical specialties. This is especially important should your medical condition require additional specialized care.

While you do not need to be an existing Physicians Regional patient to take advantage of the walk-in clinic, existing Physicians Regional patients do have an advantage. Because all patient records are stored electronically, physicians and staff at our Marco facility have immediate access to all patient records throughout our system.

“In medicine, we often treat patients and don’t immediately get to see a tangible result,” says Dr. Farris. “When people come to our clinic, I often get to see the benefit of my work. That’s very rewarding. Plus, ‘doctor’ actually means ‘teacher.’ We teach people to take care of themselves.”

Dr. Farris has definitely proven to be a perfect match for this specific role.

“I love the variety. I like not knowing what is going to walk through the door. And when you walk through our door, I’m ready for you.”

Walk-in clinic hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
