The Naples Lions Club’s primary mission is the preservation of sight and hearing by funding eye exams, providing free eyeglasses, eye surgery and hearing aids for financially distressed Collier County adults and children.
To add to their arsenal of eye screening equipment, the club obtained a new autorefractor to measure the need for glasses, and an Air Puff Tonometer to measure eye pressures to detect glaucoma. The Naples Lions Club has added a state-of-the-art “Gift of Sight on Wheels” van.
Funded by donations from Rick Hendricks Chevrolet, The League Club, the Naples Children’s Education Foundation (NCEF), founders of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, The Florida Lions Eye Clinic, the District 35-I Lions Sight Foundation, the Naples Lions Club Foundation, Naples Nites Lions Club, the Marco Island Lions Club, individual donors, foundations and a matching grant of $31,500 from the Lions Club International Foundation (LCEF), the van will allow the Naples Area Lions Clubs to safely transport fragile equipment and donated glasses to multiple pre-school and community eye and ear screenings throughout Collier County.
“We screen 2,000 plus pre-school children at over 50 child-care centers annually,” commented Richard Guinta, President of the Naples Lions Club. “This new ‘Gift of Sight on Wheels’ van will make it easier and certainly more efficient to meet and even increase these numbers, as well as increase our community health and vision screenings for adults.”
Known as “Knights of the Blind,” the 1.4 million members of the 47,000 Lions Clubs across the globe use 100% of all donated funds to help the communities in which they serve.
“Our members, including five retired ophthalmologists, donate their time, energy and expertise to provide needy adults and children with diabetes, blood pressure testing, school scholarships, and of course free eye exams and glasses,” added Dr. Howard Freedman, Treasurer of the Naples club. “This van will help us continue to make a real difference in Collier County.”
The Naples Lions Club meets monthly, every first and third Tuesday at 11:30 AM for lunch at VFW Post 7721, 800 Neffs Way, on the north corner of Collier Boulevard and Pine Ridge Road in Naples.
