On Saturday, May 5th, the Marco Island born charity, Upon a Star Foundation, will host its sixth annual Talk Derby to Me. This event has quickly become a local favorite. Last year an estimated 300 attended the party. The Marco Island Brewery is host to the event. General Admission starts at 4:30 PM with a special VIP reception at 3:30 PM. “The group at Upon a Star does a great job helping families here on the Island and in Naples. They sure know how to get people to an event! We are happy to help,” says Brewery owner, Lynette LaCava. “Frank goes all out for them, wait until you see the Derby buffet this year!”

Howard and Michelle Jordan founded Upon a Star in 2007 with the help of a few Marco Island neighbors. Their goal is a little different than most charities. “We try to identify the families that fall between the cracks. We know how much a little extra help can mean to a family. When you have 3 or 4 kids it can be a big challenge to find the money to participate. Our goal is all about having kids participate,” Michelle Jordan added.

In the past year, they have funded soccer, football, baseball, dance classes and prom. “You would cry if you read some of the letters from the people we have helped, especially the Moms, it’s incredible.” They have helped other organizations in the area including: Joy of Giving, Marco Island Charter Middle School, Tommie Barfield and the Center for Abused Women & Children. “We have three kids, we are on the sports fields, teachers and coaches help us identify the families that need help and we help,

it’s that simple.”

“Upon a Star is something we are extremely proud of. A group of neighbors identified a need and we are filling it. For those who think there is no need if you live on Marco, take your blinders off. Families need your help right here, if you are in the position to help, help,” Howard Jordan added.

Back to the party…..
