The Marco Island Academy volleyball team lost the District 2A District 12 championship to First Baptist Academy, 25-9, 25-9, 25-8, on Thursday, October 15, at the Marco Island Charter Middle School gym. The good news is that the Rays will still advance to the regional playoffs.
FBA came out strong and never faltered in taking an easy win over the Rays. The top two teams in the district automatically advance to the regionals.
“They’re a great team,” said the Rays Head Coach, Alyssa Stolinas. “They really are. But I don’t think we really showed up to play; I really don’t. We had an off night. We have the potential to rally with them. We didn’t step up when we needed to. And we had to because they have a great program. We’ll grow when we watch the film and I point things out.
“We could have done better,” Stolinas continued. “There are definitely things we have to work on going into regionals. We’re excited. We’re ready to compete in regionals and hopefully move on.”
The Rays, 13-7, travel to Ft. Myers on Thursday, October 22, to play Evangelical Christian, 2-12, who advanced by defeating Sarasota Christian 25-22, 13-25, 25-20, 25-20 to win the 2A District 11 championship.
“I think we’re comparable to Evangelical Christian,” Stolinas said. “If we advance against Evangelical Christian, we could end up playing FBA again.”
FBA, 14-3, hosts Sarasota Christian, 14-11, on Thursday, October 22.
