Spongers End Trojans’ Season with Regional Semi-Final Defeat

The Lely Trojans faced the Tarpon Springs Spongers in the Regional Semi-Finals at the Lely High School Gym. Both teams brought out the best in each other and held long rallies throughout the entire match. The Tarpon Springs Spongers closed out the night in three hard-fought games. Final score for the Spongers: 25-20, 25-18, 25-22.

“They played their best volleyball of the season tonight. They fought really hard. I am proud of them all,” expresses Assistant Coach Jennifer Stampfli, who proudly (and anxiously) watched her daughter Amanda play in her last volleyball match as a Lely Trojan.

“We had a very impressive season. Each year, we will improve as the team continues to work on conditioning, weight training, and playing club ball. This year was amazing, and I look forward to our future as we continue to promote volleyball in South Naples and Marco Island,” remarks Head Coach Alejandro Acorona.

The Spongers will face the Sebring Blue Streaks on November 6 at 7pm in the Regional Finals. The Regional winner moves on to the Final Four and plays in the State Semi-Finals on November 10. The 6A FHSAA State Championship will be played on November 17.
