Shop Till You Drop?

All That Glitters

Submitted Photo

The new season is off to an official start. The Farmers Market has resumed and so has the trafficI’m told by my customers who happen to be in the realty business, that business is better than good. So good in fact that many homes are being sold sight unseen. The walkthrough is done on the day of the closing? These are strange times my friends, in case you haven’t noticed folks are flocking here not just to vacation, but to reside here permanently. Besides having the best Black Friday ever—even Saturday for that matterever since my existence in here 1994. Normally, the island would be a ghost town on Black Friday, because most islanders took advantage of the sales in Naples. That was not the way it went down last week.

What seemed like was months away and surprise… the Holidays are here! It’s understandable, it’s not like we haven’t been a bit distracted these past months! I have to figure people didn’t want to deal with the shopping crowds and decided to shop locally? We still have a month of holiday shopping to go and time will tell and so will the bottom line for many island businesses.

The increase in online buying is going to be a big factor this holiday season, and I’m sure records will be broken and Amazon delivery trucks will be as prominent on this island as yellow cabs in The Big Apple!

Diamonds by the inch necklaces, or simple drops, diamond hoop earrings and studs are what’s hot so far. Don’t forget to adopt your Marco Angel pendants in sterling or solid gold before our present stock is exhausted.

One of my saving graces is that many but not all folks are hesitant buying a big-ticket jewelry item from a pic on a cellphone or PC, and giving up credit card information without seeing the true quality and craftsmanship.

The addition to seeing many new faces and happnew customers is bewildering considering our current national situation. I’m not going to get political here, I have been in the jewelry biz here on the island for nearly 28 yearsI have endured hurricanes, floods, oil spills, hurricanes, tornadoes, a recession or two, and a 2-year mall restoration project that knocked me to my knees and that includes many of my sister, brother retailers and restauranteurs on more than one occasion. Many of us survived, some did not. Those of us who managed to shake it off, persevere and regroup was because of you, our Marco Island citizens who came together and helped all those who were in a bad way especially after Irma. When parttime residents arrived, they helped get the island up and running this included tourists and visitors alike.

It may be true that all of us here and now are fortunate enough to live in a bubble that somehow resists what is ailing the rest of the country, and I feel more than blessed when I see jewelry stores across the country that are closing their doors forever; and unbelievably, I’m seeing an increase in my business. Speaking of Guardian Angels, those of you that have the holiday spirit to help those in need, I’m still replacing a watch battery for three cans of food to be donated to local food banks.

Many thanks to one of my loyal customers who misunderstood my charitable intentions, and thought it was my family and I who had fallen on hard times, the two shopping bags of food you left asking for nothing in return was donated to My Daily Bread food pantry on the island. There is an example of how residents heed the call to people in need!

I wish to thank those who have done so already, I’m sure our food donation was appreciated and distributed to families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.

There are some restrictions as to what batteries can or cannot be replaced in certain brands of watches. You can call the shop for details at 239-394-9275

Once again, thank you for your support and patronage all these 24 years and counting a very Happy Holiday season to you and your family from all of us at The Harbor Goldsmith,
