The YMCA and the Marco Bike Path Committee are coming together for the second year in a row for their Tour de Marco bike ride. The event, held April 1st, will begin and end at the Greater Area Marco Island YMCA, 101 Sandhill Street. All are encouraged to participate in this fundraising event for the YMCA.

Tour de Marco is split into two different bike rides. The 30-mile ride begins at 8:00 AM and the 15-mile ride will start at 9:00 AM. Bikers can register beginning at 7:00 AM the day of the race for $25, or register in advance for $20. Preregister at Enter “Tour de Marco” in the key word search, or call the YMCA at 239-394-3144.

Directional arrows along the route will help to guide all bikers along the right path. Navigational aides wearing brightly colored shirts will be riding with both groups. The Marco Island Police Department and other volunteers will be on hand, directing bikers and handling traffic safety. A rest area will also be set up at the Goodland Boat Park.

All bikers are required to wear helmets during Tour de Marco. Any participants under the age of 18 must have a parental waiver signed. The first 200 registrants will receive complimentary water bottles and refreshments will be provided throughout the ride. A raffle will take place after the race, at about 10:30 AM.

Tour de Marco is not a timed race. It is a ride designed to expose riders to the beauty of Marco Island, Goodland and surrounding areas. Bikers on the 30-mile path will wind through the hills of the Estates area of Marco and will also tour Key Marco on their way to Goodland and back.

Steve Reynolds of the YMCA will be the announcer for the event; supplying music and conducting the raffle. Leslie Drake of the Y has been helpful in obtaining city permits for the event along with Debbie McCabe. Lieutenant Beucler of the MIPD has been helpful in setting up the safest possible route.

Volunteers are still needed to help direct bikers. Jim Seegers, a member of the Marco Bike Path committee, is working as liaison between the YMCA and the committee. As liaison, he has been instrumental in all aspects of the event. The YMCA has also actively been working towards this event. Inquire or volunteer by calling the YMCA at 239-394-3144 or by reaching Jim Seegers at 239-394-4888 or by email at
