Saving a Life and Fulfilling a Wish

Queren Pierre, 10, gets the blue carpet treatment at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Center.

On Wednesday, September 4th the blue carpet was rolled out on Fifth Avenue in Naples, as 10-year old Queren Pierre and her family were welcomed at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Resource Center. There they were hosted by the Center in grand style for Queren’s Make-A-Wish fulfillment of a Disney Cruise. The cruise Wish Sponsor is the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation.

Following her diagnosis with a life-threatening brain tumor, Queren was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, which handles extreme pediatric cases, for life-saving surgery. After removal of the tumor, Queren was treated by Nicklaus Children’s Hematology/Oncology Department, where her chemotherapy treatments just ended. North Naples Hospital Pediatric Unit provided Queren’s care locally.

With her family by her side, Queren was given royal treatment, with attendants from the Naples Police and Fire Departments. Queren arrived by fire truck, while her bothers, Ronald Prince Pierre 5 and Frednaldy Pierre, 3 rode in a police car, very excited as the sirens were turned on as they approached their destination.

Her father, Ronald Pierre is a nurse at Naples Community Hospital and her mother Fredline is studying to be a nurse.

Among the well-wishers gathered to greet Queren Pierre and her family were nurses from NCH Healthcare’s North Naples Hospital Pediatric Unit, who said, “Queren is such a sweet little girl” who captured their hearts.

When Make-A-Wish organizes a Wish for a child, it gathers information about all of his or her favorite things. Learning that Queren loves cotton candy, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Volunteer Ambassador Mary Jo McLaughlin became a quick study on making it. They also donated a backpack full of games to keep the children entertained on the two-hour drive from their home to the cruise.

Publix donated snacks for the event, including the children’s favorites: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and chicken nuggets, as well as cake and ice cream.

The family was thrilled to board the Disney cruise on Monday, September 9.
