Relay For Life 2014 Kicks Off November 5th

Lisa Honig

The American Cancer Society and the 2014 Relay For Life Committee invite everyone to join us at the Marco Island Lutheran Church on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 5:30 PM to celebrate the Kickoff of Relay for Life 2014! This year’s theme is ‘A World of Hope’ where teams will pick a country that their team will use as a backdrop for their activities leading up to and at the Relay For Life which this year will be held at Mackle Park April 12-13, 2014.

Kickoff is an opportunity for returning teams to come back and see what’s new for 2014 and it’s also a great opportunity for individuals and businesses who or may not be familiar with Relay to come and find out what Relay is all about and determine if they can participate either as a team or a sponsor. We encourage teams to register at Kickoff (or before) because you have to register to pick your country! We are really excited to see how the teams incorporate their country of choice into their fundraising efforts and campsite decorations at Relay.

Relay For Life is held overnight as individuals and teams will camp out at Mackle Park with the goal of keeping at least one team member walking on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups… people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. If you have never been to a Relay it is truly a community festival with music, games, food and activities for the whole family to enjoy. We also take the time to honor our survivors and to remember those we have lost to cancer. I guarantee that you will have a great time, that you will be moved by the ceremony and that you will be proud of what your community is doing to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Funds raised at Relay For Life of Marco Island help the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer. In 2013, Relay For Life events across the great state of Florida raised over $22 million to help cancer patients and their families in local communities and to fund lifesaving cancer research. Last year our community raised an astounding $224,000 to help the American Cancer Society save more lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

Thank you to the Lutheran Church for being our hosts for Kickoff and to our committee for their commitment and passion for Relay For Life and our mission to finish the fight. I look forward to seeing everyone at Kickoff!
