Rare Look Back at our Florida History

The Marco Island Historical Society will present a program about a little-known part of our state history on Tuesday July 5 at 7 p.m. in our Rose History Hall. Refreshments will open the evening and our guest speaker’s program will begin at 7:30.

Andrew Tetlow has been the curator at Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero for about two years. His background before coming to the Florida State Park Service was in Mayan Archaeology in Central America. Mr. Tetlow’s field work was conducted in Belize, Mexico, and El Salvador. He received his BA in Anthropology from the University of Central Florida and obtained his MA in Archaeology as well from UCF.

Throughout it’s history, Florida has welcomed pioneers of all kinds. Cyrus Reed Teed and his followers from Chicago were probably the most unusual, bringing their beliefs to Estero in 1894 to build New Jerusalem for Teed’s new faith, Koreshanity (Hebrew for Cyrus). The colony known as the Koreshan Unity, believed that the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere. The colony began fading after Teed’s death in 1908, and in 1961 the last four members deeded the land to the state.

Our fascinating talk that night will highlight Teed and his unique beliefs.

Friday, join us as we make an historic pilgrimage to see a unique community and view first hand how the Koreshan people lived in a true Florida wilderness. The cost of the trip is just $20 which includes lunch at Hemingway’s at Coconut Point. There is no charge for the Koreshan museum, but there is a $5 fee per car to enter the grounds. Carpools will gather at 9:00 AM on Friday July 8 in our museum parking lot. Send checks to Jerry Masters, 316 Colonial Avenue, Marco Island, FL 34145/ Absolute deadline for checks is the night of our meeting, July 5. For more details, go to our website at
