An impromptu champagne celebration was held at the Marco Island Historical Museum recently when noted local artist Malenda Trick reached the halfway mark on her ambitious mural dedicated to American participation in the military and warfare, especially to our veterans.

The mural is approximately 5 feet high and 18 feet long, and is a polychrome rendition painted on a double-sided canvas in collage style, blending many facets of the vast subject.

The location of the work-in-progress has been the lobby of the Marco Island Historical Museum and is supported by a generous grant from Marco Island Foundation for the Arts (MIFA). Those who have come to view the work in progress have offered favorable comments and many questions. On hand to encourage Malenda as she paints from 12-3 PM every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and answer many of the queries has been the project director and her close friend Kat Nimtz Rinaldo. Both ladies were happy to take a moment for the champagne and relaxation.

The completed side of the mural depicts the Florida story in the American military, while the reverse will show nationwide information. If you wish to furnish information or “action” shots from any of our war efforts e-mail them to for their consideration, and if you want your own veterans recognized in this work, stop by the Marco Island Historical Museum. For each $25 donation (monies go to selected Veterans projects), their names can be added to this wall.

After completion of the two sides, the mural will be unveiled at a special reception at the museum on Nov. 11 from 5-7 PM. It then will travel throughout Florida and by April 23-26, 2015, will have made its way to Orlando to be a part of the Daughters of the American Revolution convention that the Marco Island Chapter is hosting this coming year. It is hoped that this wonderful work can then be exported to move around our nation, reminding all who see it of the great debt we owe these men and women of our armed services.
