Parading the streets of Marco

By Coastal Breeze News Staff

With great anticipation and excitement, Marco Island’s 24th Annual Christmas Island Style Street Parade was welcomed by cheering, shouting crowds. The parade is the pinnacle event after weeks of planned activities geared towards celebrating Christmas in proper island- style. According to Steve Stefanides, “I think we had more in attendance this year than ever before.” The weather certainly cooperated this year. Cars and trucks started lining up along the parade route early in the morning. While others hauled out chairs and ropes to stake out their prime viewing area. Not only were those walking the parade handing out candies, but some of the tailgater’s served up hot food and drinks to family and friends. This year’s parade saw a few changes. For one, Santa and Mrs. Claus weren’t at the end of the parade, but halfway through in an elegant carriage. The parade had a few familiar participants as well, like Just Friends, Lely Jazz Band, the Marco Island Fire Department, the Shriner’s Club riding in their little Flintstone’s cars, the Chamber of Commerce and more. A few new additions this year included the US Post Office, Condee Cooling and Electric, Simply Cupcakes and more.
