Origami Made Easy at Lunch with Friends Over 60

Barbara Parisi, Origami master, guiding Regina Dayton with her Origami process.

It was full a house in June with 130+ guests at the Lunch with Friends held monthly at the Marco Island Lutheran Church.

Barbara Parisi, a local artist and origami master, provided sheets of instruction on each table along with samples of finished origami miniatures. Volunteers were on hand to help out.

Origami – the art of folding paper is often associated with Japanese culture. Origami purists transform a flat sheet of square paper into a beautifully finished sculpture without scissors or glue. Barbara’s first sculpture was a fish, and she patiently guided participants through the entire process.

She started with “everybody take a sheet of paper and fold into creases and then into folds. You have a flat sheet of paper and you are going to turn it into a sculpture very slowly. The more precise you are with your fold, the better your finished product will be.”

The instructions for a fish appeared deceptively simple but for some, it was “freakin” hard.

Origami was a fun, hands-on activity with lots of laughter in between the many creases and folds, even if the end products did not resemble a fish, fox or a swan. Mission accomplished!

It was also Marie Seneschal’s 90th Birthday! Marie is well known for her colorful blankets or afghans for needy children. Other knitters and seamstresses on the island share their fabric scraps with Marie to turn into “blankets of love.”

Steve Reynolds of Marco’s YMCA also made two important announcements. One is the organization’s name change to YMCA of South Collier to include the individuals and families in the South and East Naples’ areas.

The YMCA of South Collier will also present Elder Law Q&A on July 25th from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. During this presentation, Burzynski Elder Law will discuss legal planning for long term care, eligibility for government benefits (Medicaid/VA) and the opportunity to ask legal questions. RSVP to Penny Dickerson by Tuesday, June 24th by email at: or call: 239-434-8557.

YMCA of South Collier will be presenting “FREE 4th Thursday” starting Thursday, July 27th with a Health and Wellness Fair from 11:30 AM to 1 PM and a lunch and speaker series. For July 27th, Denise Pancyrz, will talk about how to “Reverse My Diabetes.” No registration is required.

The free Lunch with Friends over 60 on the 3rd Wednesday of each month is a collaboration between the YMCA of South Collier, Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, and Marco Island Lutheran Church. Thanks to Italian Deli for the delicious food for the June 19th luncheon.

For July 17th luncheon, please RSVP to Nancy Kot by phone: 706-566-8532 or email: If you need a ride, it can be provided.
