Operation Christmas Child—The Shoebox project

Four Marco churches, the Girl Scouts, Curves, the Marco Tea Ladies and several local schools will be a part of world’s largest Christmas project, Operation Christmas Child. This year the international holiday outreach of Samaritan’s Purse will collect and deliver the 100 millionth shoebox gift. This milestone will be reached after 20 years of packing, collecting, transporting and hand-delivering school supplies, toys, necessity items and candy to suffering children around the globe.

Operation Christmas Child has hand-delivered more than 94 million gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children in more than 130 countries. For many of these children, the simple shoebox will be the first gift they have ever received.

Once the gifts are transported to countries around the world, Samaritan’s Purse works with volunteer ministry partners and pastors to distribute them by trucks, trains, boats, dogsleds, elephants, yaks and camels.

Information on and how to pack and prepare your box may be found at The Family Church, 1450 Winterberry Drive; Marco Presbyterian Church, 875 West Elkcam Circle; New Life Community Church, 590 Elkcam Circle and Wesley United Methodist Church, 350 S. Barfield Drive; at or by calling (800) 353-5949.

Participates may also pick up empty shoeboxes in the narthex of Marco Presbyterian Church. The gift filled shoeboxes may be dropped at the Presbyterian church from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 12 to 16 and 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 17 and 18.

A donation of $7 is requested for each shoebox to help cover shipping and other project costs. Please no war related items, liquids or perishables.

Donors may also track their box to the destination country where it will be hand-delivered to a child by registering at the Ways to Give, Follow Your Box web page at

This is the ninth year that Marco Presbyterian Church has served as organizer and the collection site for the Marco area. The goal for Marco Island is 700 boxes.
