“ONE WORLD ONE HOPE” What is Your Definition of Relay?

By Maureen Chodaba

What does the word “relay” mean to you? The dictionary defines relay as “the act of passing something along from one person or group to another, as in passing a baton in a race” or “an electrical device designed to permit current flowing through in one circuit can switch on and off a current in a second circuit”. These are both adequate definitions, but there is another meaning of the word when it is used as the Relay For Life. In order to understand the definition of the Relay For Life, one needs to experience the event itself. The Relay For Life was born in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt of Tacoma, WA walked and ran around a track for hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Today, the Relay For Life has grown to become a global movement, raising $5 billion to fight cancer. The Relay For Life of Marco Island, “One World One Hope”, presented by Robert J. Flugger and sponsored by Rene and Grace Villeneuve, VITAS Healthcare, Kriger Orthodontics, and Preferred Care Home Health Services, will be held April 18, 2015 from 11 am until 11 pm at beautiful Mackle Park. This event offers FREE admission for everyone! There will be a walking track, but don’t expect to see an actual relay race. The only race is the one to end the fight against cancer once and for all. The walking part of the Relay For Life has become almost symbolic in nature, an emblem of the continuous fight against this
dreaded disease. There is so much more to this celebration of life! The event begins with an opening ceremony and survivors’ lap around the track, a testimonial to the fact that we have come a long way in this battle. A free lunch for all cancer survivors at noon is followed by a day filled with live entertainment, food, games, and FUN! The Relay For Life teams have been diligently raising funds for months leading up to the event. The teams will be located at various booths around the park, each one depicting a country from around the world. Luminaria, small beacons of light will be displayed, each one honoring or remembering a loved one. At 9 pm, the Luminaria Ceremony will embrace the crowd in an emotional wave of hope and remembrance. Yes, the Relay For Life can be defined as “the passing of something from one person to another”, that “something” being a message of hope. And yes, it can even be defined as an electrical device for flowing current, because the energy of the Relay For Life is indeed electric! But the best definition is found in these words – Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. There are so many ways to participate in this event. Join an existing Relay For Life team or start one of your own! Or, just plan to attend this community festival with family and friends for a day of fun, entertainment, and inspiration!
