Marco Island Police Detective Lorenzo Smith beamed with pride as he received the coveted 2020 Officer of the Year Award during a luncheon at the Hideaway Beach Club on February 2. He was accompanied by his parents, Frank and Carmela Smith, and girlfriend Victoria Mann, to support the detective in celebrating his significant achievement.
The luncheon was hosted by the Marco Island Police Foundation and usually is a sold-out event. However, due to the ongoing issues concerning the COVID-19 situation, the numbers in attendance were restricted to Smith and his guests, Command Staff and the Board of Directors of the Police Foundation.
Incoming Foundation President Vernon Geberth welcomed those in attendance and introduced Captain Rich Stoltenborg, MIPD Operations Captain, who was representing Police Chief Tracy Frazzano in her absence.
Stoltenborg spoke of Smith’s commitment to his profession and his thirst for knowledge. Smith holds an Associate of Arts Degree from Broward College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Florida Atlantic College, and a Florida Law Enforcement Certificate from Palm Beach State College.
Prior to coming to Marco Island in 2016, Smith served with the Coconut Creek Police Department in Broward County. Since joining the Marco Department, he has served in the Patrol Division as well as the Investigation Bureau. He also has served as a Field Training Officer with the department.
In the past, Smith has received numerous awards and citations for his work within the department.
