Notice from the Marco Island Police Department

Recently several unlocked vehicles were entered in the overnight hours in the north-east area of the City of Marco Island. The vehicles were ransacked and valuables taken. The popularity of MP3 players, GPS devices, radar detectors, TV / stereo equipment, laptop computers, and cellular phones provide valuable targets for would-be thieves.  Any vehicle with a visible power cord or mount, briefcase, purse, gym bag or other valuables left in sight may be a target.  Sunglasses, CD’s, wallets, backpacks, credit cards and loose change are common targets as well.

The Marco Island Police Department would like to remind you that you have the ability to deter and possibly prevent these thefts.  The following active crime prevention measures are recommended:

  1. Always lock your car.
  2. Avoid leaving vehicle or residence keys as well as valuables in your vehicle or in plain sight within the vehicle.
  3. Take all valuables with you or place them in your trunk—if possible, before reaching your destination or when parking your vehicle overnight.

  1. Outdoor security lighting may deter thieves.

  1. Use car alarms if installed.

  1. Record the make, model and serial number for all valuables. This will make it possible to enter any stolen item into a national computerized database, as well enable law enforcement personnel to search pawn shops.

Immediately report any suspicious activity that you see regardless of hour or perceived insignificance. Many thefts have been interrupted by police notified by an alert citizen. Call 9-1-1 and stay on the line if you see or hear something that seems unusual or suspicious. Try to get a description of the suspects and their vehicle, and do not confront suspects. Don’t think you are bothering us by calling to report suspicious activity; we need your help in making Marco Island a safe place.
