News from the Greater Marco Family YMCA

It’s time once again for Christmas Island Style/Greater Marco Family YMCA “Santa’s Calling”.

This special holiday program utilizes the information that you, the parent submit, to ensure a memorable call from the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus! Obtain your “Santa’s Calling” application form at the Customer Service desk and return your completed form to the desk by December 17, 2010.

On Sunday, December 19 Santa will begin to call area boys and girls starting at 6:00 p.m. The Greater Marco Family YMCA is not responsible for providing any gifts.

Grinchmas Camp

Get ready for a holly, jolly Christmas! Join us for “Grinchmas Camp” at the Marco YMCA. Themed from Dr. Seuss’s “The Grinch” children will play sports, take part in various games, and participate in arts/ crafts based on this theme. This kooky theme will have silly dress up days and endless fun! An off site trip to the bowling alley is slated for Wednesday, December 22.

The Giving Tree

Each year the greater Marco Family YMCA hosts” The Giving Tree” To help provide a memorable holiday for children and families that may need a little extra love and care. We are asking that our members donate in a different way this year.; we are asking for monetary donations to benefit our scholarship funds for families truly in need. Tags are displayed on our lobby tree. Please sign out your tag with the front desk and bring in your donation as soon as possible. We will be collecting donations until December 24. Girls Youth Volleyball Winter 2011 Season

Attention all girls ages 7-17. Register today for the Winter Session of Greater Marco Family YMCA Girls Volleyball. Everyone makes the team and everyone plays each game! Learn skills, teamwork, and the importance of fitness. This program features the character development values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Financial assistance is always available

Practices will be held at the Marco YMCA. Games will be held at the Naples YMCA. Transportation can be arranged if needed. Games will always be on Saturdays. Practice days/ Times will vary for each age level. Age levels are: 7-9  10-11   12-14  and 14-17( must be in high school).

Register for this program through January 7, 2011. Week of January 10, 2011- Participant phone calls. January 12/13 – Coaches meeting. Week of January 17- First practice. Week of January 24- 2nd practice, game schedules handed out. January 29- First game. February 12- Picture Day. March 5- Last regular season game. March 12- Playoff Tournament

YMCA Youth Winter Basketball Season

The Greater Marco Family YMCA Winter Basketball gets underway January 17 and you can be a member of one of the exciting teams playing for the Marco YMCA against the Naples YMCA. This program helps you learn skills, teamwork, and the importance of fitness. This program features the character development values of Caring- Honesty- Respect- Responsibility. The program is for a 5-6 year old co ed team plus 7 to 17 boys and girls teams divided up by age group.

Practices will be held at the Marco YMCA. Games will be held at the Naples YMCA. Transportation can be arranged if needed.. Games will always be on Saturdays. Practice Days/ Times will vary for each age level. Registration continues through January 7 , 2011. Coaches Meeting- January 12/13. First Practices- Week of January 17. Second week of practice- January 24. First game- January 29. Picture Day- February 12. Last regular season games- March 5. Playoff Tournament- March 12. Volunteer Coaches/ Team Sponsors always welcome

Y Be Fit

You have made your New Year’s Resolution to change your lifestyle and get fit. Now is the hard part; getting started. The Greater Marco Family YMCA “Y Be Fit” Program is designed to give you the tools you need to be successful and achieve your goals.

Each session during the eight week program includes:

  • Personal Challenge
  • Instruction and guidance on usage of fitness center and equipment
  • Personal Workout you can accomplish throughout the week.
  • Fitness and Nutrition Tips to help you in your quest for a healthy lifestyle.

Remember, it’s YOUR workout and you will be given options to modify each challenge to make it easier or more difficult for your fitness level. When: Tuesdays, January 11 to March 8, 2011. Times: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Where: Greater Marco Family YMCA Fitness Center. Program fees: $75 members. $125 Community MembersProgram limited to 8 participants. Each participant will receive a complimentary 32 oz. water bottle upon paid registration. Make – up sessions will not be offered

The only afternoon Bingo for Adults on Marco Island returns to the Greater Marco Family YMCA! Socialize! Play! Mah Jongg for Adults

Learn to play Mah Jongg. Y READS!  Needs you!

Make a difference in a child’s life! The Y READS! Program is an after school reading tutorial for first and second grade students. You will teach basic reading skills using a structured program. Tutors will volunteer at least one hour per week during the school year from Monday thru Thursday at the Manatee Elementary School.
