They looked perfectly content as they rode side-by-side on Marco Island’s newest shared-use path on San Marco Road.

It was the first time they rode the entire length of the new path.

Hunter Marshall and Sarah Jensen have only lived on the island for nine months, but they’re already in love with the bicycle facilities at their disposal.

“We’re coming up on our first-year anniversary of living full-time on Marco Island,” Marshall said. “We love it. It will be exciting when the path goes all the way to Goodland. So far, we have biked almost all over the island. We pretty much stay on the shared-use paths.”

By this time next year, the shared-use path is planned to be completed all the way to Goodland Drive.

“It’s beautiful,” Jensen said of the new path. “It’s easy. What I noticed is its pretty level. It’s the first time we’ve been on it. We’ve been waiting with bated breath,” she said with a laugh.

The couple lives on Dogwood Drive and find they can go most anywhere they want on the island on the city’s shared-use path and low traffic roads.

“We make the circle, starting on Dogwood,” Marshall said. “We go up Winterberry to Mackle Park and back down San Marco.”

“We do try to stay off of the road, because of traffic,” Jensen said. So we stay on the shared-use paths as much as we can.

“One of the places we go a lot is down South Barfield to Ludlow,” she said. “We like the low traffic roads out there.”

“We bought our recumbents when we moved here,” Jensen said. “They’re perfect for this kind of cycling. We love being outside.”

The bicycle path map, published by the City of Marco Island, is available at www.cityofmarcoisland.com/bc-bpvc.
