Many of us are on a quest to lose weight, and new diets and treatments pop up all the time. As of 2012, the annual revenue of the U.S. weight-loss industry was $20 billion, which included diet books, diet drugs and weight-loss surgeries. “100 Million Dieters, 20 Billion Weight Loss Industry,” ABC News, May 12, 2012, abcnews.go.com.
When we heard that the Island Diet Center was offering a new treatment called “Laser Lipo,” we sat down with Dr. Joseph Lang to get the details.
So how does it work?
Laser applied to the surface dissolves fat deposits below skin. The laser produces energy which liquefies the fat stored in the fat cells and releases the fat from the cells. The liquefied fatis naturally removed from the body. The result is a reduced waistline, hips or thighs without invasive surgery. The cost is considerably less than surgical liposuction, and there is no down-time for the patient.
Low level laser therapy has been used in Europe for some time, for everything from weight loss to wound therapy. Acceptance has been gaining in the United States following FDA approval of the procedure in 2006. Companies have been designing their own machines with varying frequencies of light. The machine at the Island Diet Center uses specific frequencies found in studies to dissolve fat.
The best candidates for Laser Lipo are those looking for spot reduction- not major weight loss. Fat stored in places such as the hips, back and thighs is often hard to lose. Laser Lipoallows a patient to target a specific area of the body for reduction, something that cannot be done through diet or exercise. However, Dr. Lang stresses that this treatment does not replace diet and exercise for weight loss.
In terms of results, expect the loss of 1-2 inches after treatments. Usually results are seen in 4-5 sessions. Sessions cost $100 each. The fifth session is free after the purchase of four.
The treatment requires post-session exercise for optimal results. A vibration plate in Dr. Lang’s office allows patients to exercise immediately following treatment.
Dr. Lang tells us that the procedure is very safe without side effects.
What does Dr. Lang say to the skeptics? Let the results speak for themselves!
