True collaborations reap benefits to both parties. On September 15, 2012, Brooke’s Legacy Animal Rescue volunteers were presented with a check for $1,000 by Naples Petco manager, Patrick Burns. This was a surprise grant to the rescue, which also resulted in the Petco Foundation placing them in the top 100 collaborations with Petco stores across the country. Brooke’s Legacy now has a chance to be awarded $10,000 if a month long Facebook vote goes in their favor.
For several years now, Brooke’s Legacy Animal Rescue and Naples Petco have teamed up to provide opportunities for SWFL to adopt the dogs and cats that are saved by the rescue from the euthanasia floors at kill shelters locally in Florida. Brooke’s Legacy is 100% volunteer and donation run, so this award will provide more opportunities to care for the animals currently in rescue and be able to save more dogs and cats from euthanasia. All of Brooke’s Legacy animals are in foster homes until they are adopted. The only exception is the cat condos that Petco provides for some of the cats to be seen daily in the store.
Brooke’s Legacy Animal Rescue was formed in 2004 after the sudden death of Brooke Ashley Miller. On Brooke’s 18th birthday, she was in a car accident that ultimately took her life. For her passion of animals, her family created the rescue to give animals a second chance at life.
“We are speechless at the honor it is to be recognized by one of our partners (Petco) to receive such a large award,” said Tink Bechtol, Founder of Brooke’s Legacy Animal Rescue and Brooke’s mom. “There is so much that we can do with this grant, and even more if we are awarded the larger grant. Thank you to everyone who volunteers, fosters, and supports the memory of Brooke by giving second chances.”
