The Marco Island Yacht Club (MIYC) recently hosted its annual Welcome Back to Marco Island event. The evening’s theme was “Shake, Rattle and Stroll,” and featured the music and dancing of the mid-1950s to mid-‘60s when American Bandstand was all the rage.
A vintage red Cadillac convertible was parked at the entrance of the club with a bevy of “50s girls” waving to Yacht Club members and guests as they arrived to join the fun. Attendees were adorned in costumes ranging from poodle skirts, letter sweaters, Grease outfits, and even a cheerleader.
Angela Holt, Chair of Member Events Committee, greeted everyone and then set the stage at the Yacht Club with an American Bandstand podium, sign and a Top Ten list of hits. Dick Clark, played by Jon Holt, greeted “The Kids” and told them that, “Everyone is 15 years old tonight.”
The first dance of the night was “The Stroll,” followed by a dance contest featuring the Jitterbug, or Fast Dance as they called it in Philadelphia. There were also Twist and Hula Hoop contests and awards for best costumes. Yacht Club member Gillian Hamer donated the much-coveted prizes.
An outstanding buffet was prepared by Chef Robert Aylwin, and the entertainer for the night was the fabulous Wendy Renee, who came dressed for the party in her red polka-dotted 1950s dress.
