The start of the Marco Island Police Department’s Citizen’s Academy is only three weeks away.
Final applications are being accepted now for the academy, which is in its third year. The academy consists of nine sessions, beginning January 30 and concluding on March 26.
The program’s goal, according to the Marco Police, “Is to teach the public basic police operations and techniques to bridge the information gap. Together we can form extended and expanded lines of communications between the community and its police department. Many policies and procedures related to the criminal justice system are foreign to citizens and it is expected that through education and discussion many of the questions generated by the public regarding law enforcement will be answered.”
The sessions delve into such topics as the laws of arrest/search and seizure, vehicle pursuits, traffic crash and crime scene investigations. The first two years were an overwhelming success. “We know the community expects great things of the Marco Island Police Department and the Department believes that it has designed an intense, informative and exciting program,” Chief Al Schettino writes about the training.
