MIHS Hosts 50th Anniversary Party

Dust off those dancing shoes and get ready for an evening filled with fun and nostalgia. The Marco Island Historical Society (MIHS) is throwing a party to celebrate Marco Island’s 50th anniversary. The “Party Like It’s 1965” shindig will be held Saturday, November 14, from 5:30-10:00 PM.

Come dressed in your favorite 1965 (through ‘75) garb, whether floral prints, Birkenstocks and bell-bottom jeans; miniskirts and high vinyl boots; or bright sun shades, apple green and electric blue, polyester and platform shoes. Join in the fun, make your own statement and help us bring back the memories of a bygone era. And even if you “can’t find a thing to wear,” come anyway and enjoy an evening of people-watching and great entertainment.

The evening will begin at 5:30 PM on the “mound,” under the stars, with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and music, courtesy of our very own DJ and member of the MIHS board, “Mad Man” Sam Miloro. Dinner and dancing start at 7:00 PM in the Rose History Auditorium (RHA), accompanied by the vibes of The Exit 101 Band (named after the Interstate 75 exit leading to Naples and Marco). These accomplished and highly sought-after musicians specialize in popular songs of the past—think the twist, rock and pop, Motown and disco—and know how to get the party rolling and the crowd up and shouting for more.

To set the mood, we’ll transform the RHA from Calusa chic to a decor reminiscent of those long ago years—lava lamps, flowers, mirror balls and other glisten and gleam. There’ll be a silent auction, filled with quality, one-of-a-kind items, gift baskets, artwork and restaurant and vacation packages, all donated by Marco Island businesses and residents, plus plenty of other surprises along the way. A Twist Contest. A prize for the best-dressed “hipster” couple. Door prizes. We are committed to making this party one you’ll remember and talk about for some time to come.

Space is limited, so make your reservations as soon as possible. Tickets are $125 per person. Part of this fee will go to the Society’s Endowment Fund and the CATapult Campaign, which is dedicated to bringing the Key Marco Cat and other related artifacts back to the museum, and is a tax-deductible contribution.

To purchase tickets, call Susan Pernini at 239-389-6447 or visit her in person in the museum’s administration building. Cash, check or credit cards (Visa, Discover or Master Card) are accepted. The MIHS Museum is located at 180 South Heathwood Drive, across from the library. For more information, go online to
