A New Year’s Tradition!

On January 16th, the Marco Island Academy Key Club sponsored the first beach cleanup of 2021 at South Beach. It drew over 50 volunteers, with more than 30 members coming from the MIA Key Club. They were joined by members of the community who brought along their friends and neighbors. With Red Tide blowing and creating some coughing and light throat irritation, volunteers took to the task to pick up the litter left behind.

MIA’s Key Club is a student-led organization that provides its members opportunities for community service, build character and develop leadership skills. Key Club is sponsored by the Marco Island Kiwanis Club.

In past years, the Key Club started from Tigertail and met up at South Beach. This year was a little differentwith COVID restrictions and Red Tide the two-hour cleanup was shortened to areas between South Beach and JW Marriott.

The beach cleanup is organized by Marco’s Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee and joined by a monthly partner or sponsor. Beach cleanup is dependent on the dedication and passion of volunteers who come out monthly to help pick up trash left behind by visitors.

We thank all the 2020 Beach Cleanup sponsors and welcome the many organizations and business re-signing for the 2021 season. Thanks in advance to these 2021 sponsors: Ace Painting, Starbucks, America’s Boating Club, Marco Island Watersports, Marco Island Association of Realtors, Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, CJ’s on the Bay, MICA, Marco Island Woman’s Club. If your organization or businesses would like to become a partner for a beach cleanup, please email Tonia Selmeski at:
