MI Half Marathon Takes off at Sunrise

By Steve Gimmestad

The sun just broke over trees as the horn sounded for the start of the Marco Island Half Marathon Run last Sunday. Runners assembled in the pre-dawn hours to prepare for the event which benefits many local organizations. The Half Marathon originated as a way to give back to the community of Marco Island and was held in memory of Carole Sbertoli, a realtor, who suddenly passed away in August, 2007. “We have 465 runners on the course this morning,” said Race Director Jennifer Barstow. “It’s down a bit from last year, but we expected that. Marco is very busy this time of year. It’s always a great event and this year there are some runners in costume.” Each person has their own personal goals for participating, whether it be an improved time, the spirit of competition or just for fun. But they are also supporting many local organizations in the process. A full list of benefactors can be found on their website (listed below.) “It is so heartwarming to see every
one’s dedication to this event,” said Patty Line, Event PR director. “The volunteers really come together to support the community and the event. We couldn’t do it without them.” The course started at the Shops of Marco and heads out San Marco Road to the
Goodland bridge, around Key Marco and back to the finish line at the parking lot. An award ceremony was held after the race for top runners. The course is sanctioned by the USATF and times are tracked electronically for accuracy. If you like to run, like to support the community, or just like to have a great time. Start stretching out and get ready for next year. All the details, including this year’s results, can be found the official event website:
