Meet Your Area Dolphins

The Research Team on board the Dolphin Explorer is happy to share information about your area dolphins with the Coastal Breeze News readers. Each edition an individual will be profiled so that you, too, might get to know them. Dolphins can be identified by the nicks and marks on their dorsal fins.

Meet Nibbles

This adult female has been seen in the Marco Island area since we began our dolphin study in 2006.

Nibbles has very unique markings on her dorsal fin and is easily recognized. In 2007 she gave birth to Jayson, in 2012 to Coco, and in 2016 to Popcorn. During the births of these three offspring she was seen in the waters east of the Jolley Bridge, then raising her young along the Intracoastal waterway between Marco and Naples.

However, this past May we saw Nibbles with Popcorn by the bridge. Other females with young have migrated from the Intracoastal to the bridge area as well.

Dolphins are very intelligent. Maybe the red tide concentration is too strong in certain areas for them
and they moved.
