The Research Team on board the Dolphin Explorer is happy to share information about your area dolphins with the Coastal Breeze News readers. Each edition an individual will be profiled so that you, too, might get to know them. Dolphins can be identified by the nicks and marks on their dorsal fins.
Turning five years old this fall, Anji is in its second full year on its own. The markings on the dorsal fin are very distinctive, especially the semi-circular curve near the backbone. Calves will stay with mom for three to four years and, in Anji’s case, mom had a new baby when Anji turned three so our profiled dolphin was out on its own at that time. The first year away from mom is very difficult and Anji spent a lot of that year fine tuning fishing skills and now seems well adapted to life
as a sub-adult.
