A visit to the dentist. The phrase alone can strike fear in the hearts of many. I know. I was a registered dental hygienist in New York State for 33 years before I “retired” to beautiful Marco Island. I remember the apprehension and anxiety of many patients as they entered the office for that necessary but dreaded appointment. But today there is good news. The field of dentistry is rapidly changing with advances in technology, techniques and new treatments, all designed with the patient’s wellbeing and comfort in mind. Rick and Danielle Siegel, newcomers to our island, would like to show you how.

Dr. Richard “Rick” Siegel can trace his professional roots to a bachelor’s degree in psychology that he received from the College of Wooster in 1981. He wrote an independent thesis on biofeedback and has since become a Certified Heartmath Practitioner and Certified Heartmath Trainer. Heartmath is a technique that focuses on improving the body’s physiology, enabling the brain to function with less stress and an increased flow of resilience. In 1985, he graduated from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Since then, he enjoyed practicing dentistry in Columbus, Ohio, continuously learning and expanding his skills. Dr. Siegel is an accredited member and trainer with the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, as well as a Fellow Member of the International Congress of Oral Implantology. Dr. Siegel trained other dentists in the proper use of Botox at the 2014 Annual Session of the American Dental Association in San Antonio, Texas. He is one of the first dentists in the U.S. to have received Master Certification in DenMat Lumineers, a cosmetic veneer of advancement in aesthetic dentistry. He has written articles on stress reduction for dentists and techniques for handling patients’ needle anxiety. Outside of the dental office, he has used his Heartmath techniques to help high school and college athletes, particularly wrestlers, in building resilience, decision-making and faster reaction times.

Upon vacationing on Marco Island, he and his wife Danielle did what so many of us have done. When they crossed the Jolley Bridge, they fell in love with this little piece of paradise. In December 2015, he retook the dental board and obtained his Florida dental licensure. The Siegels are looking forward to opening Siegel Dental at the Shops of Marco plaza this fall.

When asked what the best feature of his new dental practice would be, Dr. Siegel immediately said “Danielle.” Danielle Siegel has served as Rick’s office manager for 20 years. Rick credits Danielle with much of the practice’s success. Trained in The Coaching Program, a system specifically geared toward business management of dental offices, Danielle is an insurance specialist with a fine-tuned knowledge of codes for services. At the front desk, Danielle will greet the patients with her dazzling smile, warmth, and charm. Danielle described their non-judgmental philosophy of practice, saying, “We listen to what the patient wants. We don’t lecture you. We are here to help you.”

The practice will feature many unique services and technologies, all in which Dr. Siegel has received advanced training. In addition to regular preventive dental care, services will include full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, root canal, cosmetic Botox and dermal fillers, therapeutic Botox for treatment of TMJ and migraines, and sleep apnea therapy. Dr. Siegel performs extensive intra-oral and head and neck exams for early detection of oral cancer for all patients at each regular preventive visit. He utilizes Velscope technology, a wireless handheld scope that uses natural tissue fluorescence to aid in the visualization of oral mucosa abnormalities, such as oral cancer or pre-cancerous dysplasia. A state-of-the-art Nomad dental x-ray machine is Dr. Siegel’s choice for digital imaging. This handheld portable unit uses 1/3 of the radiation of other dental x-ray units. It allows the clinician to stay with the patient, taking x-rays twice as fast, reducing the number of retakes and patient exposure.

The Siegels share their island home with their friendly Golden Retriever, Oliver, who loves to swim in their pool. They are excited to begin this new chapter in their lives, creating, in their words, their “dream practice in paradise.” They strive to continue the fulfillment of their mission statement in “Creating brilliant smiles with committed determination, dedication and heart for 30 years.”

Dr. Rick Siegel’s dedication to continuing education, combined with his commitment to patient comfort and care will be an asset to healthcare on Marco Island. We welcome the Siegels to our community.
