MAY IS BUSY MONTH FOR HARRY CHAPIN FOOD BANK

May is proving to be a very active month for the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Among activities for the food bank are the 20th annual Letter Carrier Food Drive, the second annual Grandezza Golf Classic, and the beginning of the WCI Communities golfing opportunity.

Letter Carrier Food Drive

The 20th annual Letter Carrier Food Drive is the nation’s largest one-day food drive.  With the food insecure population growing in Lee County, the Saturday, May 12, food drive is extremely important to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.  Citizens can participate by leaving nonperishable food by their mailbox prior to their regular letter carrier’s delivery that day.  All food collected will be distributed to the food bank’s participating agencies at no charge.  Monetary donations are also accepted.  Volunteers are needed to help with a preliminary sorting on the 12th; those interested should contact Bedzaida Bryen at 334-7007 orbedzaidabryen@harrychapinfoodbank.org.  Volunteers who can assist the Postal Service in picking up food are asked to call Debra Mitchell, 573-9638. Volunteers can also contact Kim Berghs, United Way, at 433-2000, x260.

Grandezza Golf Classic

The second annual Grandezza Golf and Country Club’s golf classic is being held on Wednesday, May 9.  The four-player scramble shotgun start begins at 1:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 12:30.  The $125 cost per player includes green fees with cart, awards, and dinner.  Golfers, sponsors at all levels, and silent auction items are all needed for the event.  Co-chairs of the golf classic are JoAnna Bradshaw and Nancy Klaas.  To register, obtain sponsorships, donate silent auction items, or be a volunteer, contact Chris Robinson at chrisrobinson@harrychapinfoodbank.org or go to www.harrychapinfoodbank.org for additional information.

WCI Communities

For the third year, WCI Communities will donate rounds of golf at clubs in Lee and Collier counties to anyone who donates at least $100 to United Way/Harry Chapin Food Bank.  The proceeds will be split equally.  WCI’s participating clubs are Pelican Preserve Golf Club, Raptor Bay Golf Club, and The Colony Golf & Country Club.  Donations are accepted until September 14 and certificates will be issued for foursome play with carts from June 1 through September 30.  Donors may access www.WCIGolf.com for registration information.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, who provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly.  Over 1 million pounds of food are distributed monthly.  For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community.  In the past calendar year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 13.7 million pounds of food and other grocery items valued at more than $22.5 million. This is roughly the equivalent of 11 million meals to people in need.
