Marco Writer’s Networking Group

By Coastal Breeze News Staff

On Wednesday, April 11th, the local writers of Marco Island and Naples were set on “the Road to Publication” by guest speaker, Marty Ambrose. Professor Ambrose has worked at Edison State College for two decades as a professor of English, Communications and now Chair and Assessment Coordinator. She teaches an online creative writing course and is currently working on her fifth book in her cozy mystery series, The Mango Bay Mysteries by Avalon Press.

The members of the Marco Writer’s Networking Group participated in a Q & A session with Professor Ambrose. We learned about the top qualities that editors are looking for in order to get published in today’s ever changing market. VOICE stood out as the most important quality. TIGHT PACING and offering a SERIES came in second and third. To grow as a writer and become visible in the industry, Ambrose recommended attending writer’s conferences, submitting articles and short stories to magazines, newspapers and contests and having an electronic presence.

The group continues to grow as we had nine new attendees to a full house. Plans are underway to add a website and to schedule more inspiring and educational speakers for the next season. The next meeting will be Wednesday, May 9th at the Fifth Third Bank (next to the post office) at 5:30 PM.
