Marco Island Writers

By Joanne Tailele

MARCO ISLAND WRITERS (MIW), formerly The Marco Writers Networking Group may have a shorter name, but our group is certainly not short on vision. Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the Fifth Third Bank on Elkcam Circle, we are approaching our one-year anniversary this June. From its first meeting with only two people attending, the membership roster now boasts over sixty members. We have a beautiful new logo, thanks to Emily Charde Graphic Design, and anticipate having our website up and running by our July meeting. The 2012-2013 season includes more speakers to inspire and educate, workshops to get down and dirty with our writing skills, and Read & Recommend sessions where writers can share their WIP (work in progress) for constructive feedback.

MIW was proud to have Gabriella Deponte of GDProofs as our featured speaker for our May 9th meeting. Gaby is a professional copy editor and proofreader. She has over twenty years of experience and is a member of EFA, the Editorial Freelancers Association. Her clientele consists of corporations, academics and authors of both non-fiction and fiction genres. According to Gaby, “The human instinct to tell a story goes back to the caveman, and a well-told story lets

you leave your mark on the world.” We learned there are many levels to editing and proofreading, and they are not synonymous. As much as writers would like to believe “The End” means just that when we write that last word, in fact, in many ways it is just the beginning. After the fun part of writing, the real work begins: rewrites, editing, publishing and marketing. Gaby says that’s the time to take off your author hat and put on your marketing hat. Gaby can help take the sting out of part of that drudgery. If you are interested in finding out more about her services and fees, you can reach her at or www.gdproofs. It was a pleasure having her with us to introduce some reality into our impulsive, creative writers’ brains.

Marco Island Writers will be celebrating its one-year anniversary at Quinn’s on the Beach at the Marriott Hotel in lieu of our standard meeting at the bank. The time is 6-8 p.m. on June 13, 2012. Please note it will be a cash bar. Members and guests are welcome to join us by calling Joanne Tailele at 239-784-2637 or jtailele@aol. com or Krista Santora at 239-776-7580 or The July meeting will resume at the Fifth Third bank on July 11, 2012.
