Marco Island Writers Meet

By Maggie Gust

We are excited about our second meeting of this new year. On Wednesday, February 10, 2016, Marco Island Writers, Inc. will welcome Jennifer FitzGerald of Fort Myers-based Mother Spider Book Designs. She chose the name for her business based on the fact that she was pregnant at the time she founded the company and was working on a college degree in design and website development. These two factors plus her life-long affinity for spiders generated the name.

Jennifer will present tips on book design and interior formatting and explain why these elements are essential to a successful product. Not only do they increase the marketability of the writing, but also the anticipation and enjoyment of the reader, the ultimate goal of every writer. Jennifer has worked with over 500 authors through Mother Spider Book Designs and her two publishing companies.

The January 13, 2016 meeting exceeded our expectations for success – it rocked! Literary agent Nicole Resciniti and Marisa Cleveland, executive director of R&D for Florida and New York, were joined by the owner of the agency, Mary Sue Seymour, a very pleasant surprise. The information they shared on what is currently happening in the publishing word, advice on

grabbing a literary agent’s attention, etc. sparked excitement in the entire audience. They spontaneously agreed to hear pitches for 30 minutes at the end of the meeting and although not everyone was able to get a meeting with them, their generosity was appreciated.

Our members are continuing to staff the booth at the weekly Marco Island Farmers’ Market every Wednesday through April 13, 2016, 7:30 AM to 1 PM at Veterans Community Park, 901 Park Avenue. Drop by for a chat and check out the books for sale.
