Marco Island Academy Soccer is Off to a Record-Breaking Start

Both the boys and girls soccer teams had an outstanding night on Friday, January 10th, while battling the Donahue Shamrocks. With a 4-1 win, the boys team earned their third victory of the season, while the girls team emerged victorious 8-0 and kept their record-breaking winning streak alive.

Coach Palumbo said, “I am so excited for our girls. To be 10-0 at this point in our season, with 74 goals for and 3 against, what more could a coach ask for? However, the highlight of our season was a 1-0 victory—on a penalty shot goal scored by team Head Captain, Savannah Heimerl—against our local high school rivals the Lely Trojans. It is hard to be taken seriously when your team is fielded from a student population of approximately 250 and your home field is at the local park, all while battling public high schools with student populations of up to 2,000, who play on incredible home fields with AstroTurf and who have the best facilities available. However, our girls are doing just that. They are proving that our small school can hold its own and that we are a team to be taken seriously.”

Within the girls varsity soccer current win streak, they have emerged victorious against such large public schools as the Bonita Springs Bull Sharks (3-1 win), the Golden Gate Titans (8-1 win), and as previously mentioned, the Lely Trojans (1-0 win).

Coach Palumbo stated, “The Lely victory was an amazing accomplishment for us. A lot of our girls have played together over the years and we have coached some of their girls, as their coach has also coached some of our players. The Lely coach and I have even coached teams together in the past. It was a bittersweet victory since we all know each other so well, but we are happy to take it. Once again, it proves and validates that our school can compete with schools 7 or 8 times our size. It really speaks volumes to the heart, hustle, and dedication our girls have. We continue to stay humble and hardworking and we are excited to see how far we can take this season.”
