Local Sportsmen Come Out to Shoot Down Cancer

Twelve years ago, Marco Island Country Club members Gary Landis and Don Henderson had a special idea to combine a love for trap and skeet shooting into a unique fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The monies raised would go to help fund Pediatric Cancer Research, a project that was near and dear to many of the Island Country Club Members.

On Saturday, March 13, they celebrated the 12th year of bringing together shooting enthusiasts for a great cause. “The Island Club donated the luncheon we are eating today, and we also have members of the ‘F’ Troop, as well as members from the Island Club Tennis Group, who have entered teams into the competition,” said Gary Landis.

“All of the proceeds from this event will be going to the American Cancer Society’s Pediatric Cancer Research Program. No monies are taken out for anything, and the total of funds goes to the purpose of eradicating this terrible disease in the youngest of our population,” said Sue Olszak of the Marco Branch of the American Cancer Society.

Don Henderson explained that all of the silent auction gifts as well as the live auction items were donated as part of the event. “Germain BMW of Naples was a primary sponsor, as well as the Island Club who sponsored our luncheon,” said Henderson.

The event drew 80 shooters who accounted for the 20 teams to compete in the event. “This is such a great event which helps to fund such a wonderful cause,” said Mike Hook, a member of the “F” Troop of the Island Country Club.

Raffle prizes as well as silent and live auction items helped to propel the group over their goal of $50,000 for the cause.

“These efforts such as today’s event continue to help us move toward a day when we can celebrate victory over cancer,” said Lisa Honig, who serves as the Senior Director for Distinguished Events for the Southeast Region.

Both Landis and Henderson expressed their gratitude to all who participated and donated to the cause, as they look forward to next year’s event.
