Letter from the Commissioner

Donna Fiala

Donna Fiala

Probably most of you have heard of the plight of Clayton Lietz, who wants to build a mausoleum within the Marco cemetery but is reaching roadblocks every step of the way. I had a few questions for Clayton. Shouldn’t the Marco cemetery be listed as an Historical treasure? I understand the founding families of Weeks and Colliers are buried there. That in itself is a treasure! Why don’t people who are the decision makers want to round out the services to the community by adding a mausoleum within the cemetery? This will all be done with donations, right? Does the community want to pull together to get the job done? Sometimes people try so hard that others don’t listen to them anymore. Is this the case with Clayton Leitz?

Here’s a mystery…………who is building a sidewalk near Stan’s place in Goodland? From what I can find out, it isn’t the county transportation department. It isn’t the county’s parks and rec. department. The county’s right of way department hasn’t received a request to relinquish the land for a sidewalk. Marco Island is not building a sidewalk. It was Stan who called to ask, but we haven’t been able to track down just who is spending all of those dollars to build a sidewalk that no one knows about. At press time we still had no answers for Stan.

The Marco Island Kiwanis Club has a new meeting place – O’Donohues, and a new president, John Coff, and a few new board members. After the capable and caring leadership of Donna Niemczyk over this past year, John will take over in October. This dynamic club has such a great camaraderie that it feels like family. It’s always fun to attend the meetings at (YUK) 7:30 a.m. on Fridays, (and I’m not a morning person), just to hear their great speakers, laugh a lot, and enjoy each other’s friendship. They are always looking for new members and friends, by the way. Just walk in and they’ll do the rest!
