Let’s make May 14 a Day of Charity

The National Letter carriers’ annual food collection drive comes to an end on May 14. That is the final day for mail customers to place non-perishables by their mailboxes for pickup and delivery to the local food banks. If you cannot leave food out you can also drop off food at post offices.

Meanwhile, Southwest Florida Rotary Clubs have banded together to organize a 1 Million Meal Packing Event with Kids Against Hunger of SW Florida to help feed families in need over the summer. Did you know that in the eight counties of Southwest Florida over 61% of the children are on free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. None of these children can rely on this assistance during the weekend. Again, none of these children can access this program during the Summer. Who will help these families over the summer? Rotary and Kids Against Hunger of SW Florida’s Meals of Hope with your assistance will be there for these kids and all people in SW Florida who need food assistance.

The event will take place at three venues — Naples High School, Fort Myers’ Harborside Convention Center and Sarasota’s Riverview High School — on Saturday, May 14.There will be two shifts — 8:30-10:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Project chief Steve Popper of Naples says about 1,000 volunteers will be needed at each location to accomplish the project. To register contact Jamie Bergen at (239) 572-3720, or just go online to the aptly named web site .

Popper says the bags of just-add- water meals will help get the families in need through the summer, when needs are the greatest as children do not get meals at school. The meals are fully nutritional with soy protein and 21 vitamins and minerals and even the macaroni and cheese meal has been kid approved. The meals cost 15? each but when you are packing One Million Meals the total cost is $150,000. Any contributions will be gladly accepted and can even be sent through the website.

Come join your neighbors and friends, have fun and make a difference in our communities.
