Let’s Go For a Paddle

By Julia Barnett

April is coming, and with it, the 8th Annual Paddling Festival on Isles of Capri. Hosted by the Paradise Coast Paddler’s Club, the festival will take place Saturday, April 13th, and Sunday, April 14th, on the beach outside the island’s famous Capri Fish House.

Considered the “best little paddling festival in Florida,” the weekend will include myriad activities to educate and entertain, starting with a day of classes on Saturday, running from 8:30 AM to 4 PM. Classes will include “The Greenland Forward Stroke,” and “Bracing, Maneuvering Strokes and Sculling,” both presented by Greenland National Kayaking Championships gold medalist Greg Stamer.

“Camping Cookbook” author Michael Gray, who is also an American Canoe Association Level 4 Instructor, will be teaching an “Intro to Island Cooking” and “Master Chef: Island Style.” Classes will also be presented on Fundamentals of Safety and Rescues, Introduction to Rolling and Greenland Rolling, Advanced Rolling, and Boat Control and Maneuvers, as well as Stand Up Paddling and Advanced SUP Techniques. Each class is $69 per person, and space is limited.  For the classes, make checks payable to Paradise Coast Paddlers Club and mail to PCPC, 6182 Westport Lane, Naples, FL 34116.

Sunday’s fun will begin at 9 AM and ends at 4 PM, and includes free guided tours through mangrove tunnels – a great opportunity to learn about a natural native wonder. There will also be safety demonstrations, kayak rescue clinics, and a 3.2 miles Johnson Island Paddling Race, put on by the festival itself. More free Sunday activities will soon be announced.

Paradise Coast Paddler’s Club requires participants in all classes, demonstrations, and activities to wear their personal flotation devices for safety. It is a non-profit organization, founded in 2005, that endorses safe kayaking for people of all ages, and promotes water and environment awareness in Southwest Florida.
