The Knights of Columbus held their May social on Tuesday evening, May 17 in the San Marco Parish Center. Father Gordon Zanetti gave a blessing and Knight Sal Sciarrino led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Dinner was served and following a brief business meeting, Supreme Knight, Jose Granda reviewed the year and praised the Knights for a stellar effort of raising money for the benefit of the parish and various charities close to the heart of the Knights.
Three scholarships were awarded to students from San Marco Catholic Church. All have been altar servers and active in parish life. Will Gates is attending Edison State College while completing his high school education. Jim Heidings will attend the University of Central Florida and has just become a member of the Knights of Columbus. Devon Imm will go to Florida Gulf Coast University.
A gift of $500 was presented to St. Vincent du Paul Food Kitchen. The Tootsie Roll Drive raised $5,000 for Special Olympics. Bill Filbin accepted the awardand informed the Knights the money is used locally. Bill has been involved with Special Olympics for 22 years.
Jose commented about the basic values espoused by the Knights including a strong, unwavering commitment to Pro-Life. In keeping with their commitment the following $2,000 awards were presented: San Marco Parish Pro-Life, Collier Pregnancy Center and Providence House, a residence for single women with young children.
A check for $5,000 was presented to Father Tim Navin from the Knights 4th Degree Assembly and a check for $56,000 from the full Knights of Columbus Council of San Marco Parish. Father Navin expressed deep appreciation for the level of work involved in planning and executing the fundraising events throughout the year.
Several Knights were honored for their special contributions for the previous months and for the year.
