JW Marriott to Host Competition for Amateur Filmmakers

Taking place August 22-25 on the JW Marriott Marco Island’s 30 acre campus, the CRN 48-Hour Film Challenge is the first two-day film competition to be set in Collier County – offering a significant platform for local artists and up-and-coming filmmakers to show off their skills.

“Our Film Challenge series is an unprecedented opportunity to engage with meeting planners while also supporting emerging creators,” said Amanda Cox, Director of Sales and Marketing at the JW Marriott Marco Island. “Our hope is to spark the imagination by showcasing how hotel space can be transformed beyond the concept of a traditional meeting room, as well as inspire travel through the stories told with a local lens.”

Teams of five amateur filmmakers will have a two-day window to create a short film set within the JW Marriott Marco Island campus. Each team will be provided with a meeting space as a set to film their movie, centered on a given theme. Industry judges will evaluate the films and designate winners at a concluding award ceremony. Team prizes include mentorship with film industry contacts, access to screening events and other cinema related opportunities. All films will be exhibited throughout the JW Marriott Marco Island’s digital channels and Marriott CRN’s Meetings Buzz platform.

The film teams are sure to enjoy their surroundings. Early this year, JW Marriott Marco Island unveiled a $320 million, property-wide transformation — coined “Paradise Redefined” — that places special emphasis on meeting space. The marquee addition is the new 8-story Lanai Tower, whose first three floors are dedicated to flexible meeting space, bringing the property-wide total to more than 100,000 square feet. All of it is state-of-the-art, with the latest infrastructure and conveniences. In other words, an ideal facility to make a short film in a very short amount of time.

Additionally, the JW Marriott Marco Island is the only JW in the U.S. located directly on a beach — in this case the pristine white sands overlooking the Gulf of Mexico on Marco Island, situated on Florida’s southwest coast. The resort is located near Naples, which has a robust arts scene and film industry.

Part of the 48-Hour Film Challenge’s goal is to inspire meeting planners to think outside the box while staying at the forefront of industry trends. Incorporating the unique capabilities and settings into the Challenge further illustrates the variety of options for Marriott’s CRN’s planners, as well as the ease of hosting multi-year bookings across The Network.
