“I really don’t want to make this a big deal,” Karen Vecchio said as she discussed the change in leadership at Coiffures International after 33 years.

Karen Vecchio is taking over the reins of the salon that has been a bedrock business on the south end of the island since her mother-in-law, Theresa Vecchio, started the business in 1987.

“It’s a family business,” Vecchio said. “We’re still all working together. It’s just a transition. Theresa’s still working as much – or a little – as she wants. Now she doesn’t have to worry about anything. We’ve been working together for years. It’s less stress for her. She still has the advantage of coming to work, but she doesn’t have to worry about anything anymore. It’s impressive what she’s done. I think it’s great that she started it. It’s maintained itself on Marco Island for a long time, and it’s still in the family and still part of the community.”

Karen Vecchio led an ambitious update of the salon this past fall.

“In October and November, we decided to go for it,” Vecchio said. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive response. I think it looks beautiful.”

“It was mostly cosmetic. We got new fixtures, made a new color station, paint, new pedicure and manicure equipment, new wall treatments, a new fountain.”

A former team member, Martha Spalding, was instrumental in helping to pull off the ambitious update of the salon.

“I couldn’t haven’t done it without Martha,” Vecchio said. “She knew what our needs were. What would work, what wouldn’t work. She has a great eye for design. The color room was the biggest change. The table was custom-made. Matt Morgan, a local man, made the table.”

Vecchio appreciates the history of the salon that her mother-in-law has nurtured over the decades.

“We have clients who have been coming here for years,” she said. “It’s like seeing family when they come back every year. And we’re always meeting new people. I think that’s the best part of the business – the people. And you’re helping them look great. It’s very satisfying when you’re able to help someone achieve the look they’re after and they’re happy when they walk out the door. It’s very satisfying in that aspect because you’re helping somebody feel better about themselves. It’s never the same. Every day is different. I’m doing hair full time. I love it.”

Coiffures International is a full-service salon that caters to female and male clients, offering haircuts and styles, hair color, smoothing treatments and perms, nails, bridal services, facials, and waxing services. Karen Vecchio looks forward to following in her mother-in-law’s footsteps for many years to come.

“I think I can be as successful as she’s been,” Karen Vecchio said, “I hope so. We’ve always worked well together. People say they love coming here, that everybody’s really nice. That they have a good feeling when they come here. We always want everybody to feel good when they’re here. I think we have a great place here.”
