Island Theater Co. Presents ‘Always A Bridesmaid’

By Coastal Breeze News Staff

Wedding bells are in the air at Island Theater Co., as the troupe prepares for its April-May production of “Always A Bridesmaid.”

Written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten and directed by Pattie Ziesig and John Moulton, it is a story of love, friendship, life and marriage framed by the lifelong friendship of four women. When they make a vow to honor their friendship and be in each other’s weddings — no matter what — none of them imagined the “what” that they were ‘“no mattering” to. More than 30 years later, these friends-for-life continue to make “the long walk” for each other, determined to honor that vow.

Libby Ruth Ames, the hopeful romantic with the perfect marriage, believes — in spite of all evidence to the contrary — that her friends can find the very same happiness. Headstrong Deedra’s rock-solid union hangs by a thread when she discovers her husband of many years has not only a wandering eye but the hands to match. Monette, high spirited and self-involved, continues to test her friends’ love and patience with all-too-frequent trips down the aisle, and salt-of-the-earth, tree-hugging Charlie discovers, the hard way, that marital bliss is not the end of her rainbow, and panics when the opportunity presents itself.

The story is framed by the young daughter of one of the friends, who is giving a speech at her own wedding where the audience gets to see the lives of these women at each of their weddings. The four scenes take place over a span of seven years in the sitting room of a suite in Laurelton Oaks, Virginia, where each of the women has been married — some multiple times.

Through it all, the four friends are committed to the notion that careers, waistlines and even marriages may disappear, but real friendships last a lifetime. Forsaking all others, in sickness and in health, they repeatedly struggle to stage the perfect wedding in spite of fistfights at the altar, runaway brides and the mistaken, and unfortunate, release of a flock of white doves on the first day of hunting season.

The cast includes Karen Frizzell-Anglin as “Libby Ruth Ames,” Mai Puccio as “Monette,” Catherine Clausen-Neff as “Deedra,” Becky Irwinas Charlie, Karen Ezrine as “Sedalia” and Abby Yetter as “Kari.”
