How Often Do You Brush…

Your body? What? Never heard of body brushing? It’s one of the easiest, quickest, (cheapest), most underrated things you can do to improve your immune system among a host of other fantastic benefits! Why, you ask?

It’s detoxifying. Our body releases about a pound of waste from our skin daily; if the skin is clogged from dead skin cells, the toxins that are trying to make their way out of you end up being reabsorbed instead. Dry brushing removes these dead cells, and as a result, stimulates the immune system, better enabling it to do its job.

It makes your skin glow. All of that sloughing does a body good! Not only does it boost circulation and scrape off that dry “lizard skin” texture, but it also helps increase sebum (oil) production from the sebaceous glands, which in turn makes your skin softer.

So where do you begin? Buy a natural-bristle brush from any health food store or even online; make sure not to get a stiff one as those can be too scratchy. Find a soft to firm one that you feel comfortable using all over your body. Some say to use two — a firmer one for the body and a softer one for the torso and back — but I just use one and go gentle on those areas.

The best time to brush is first thing in the morning before a shower, but I’ve done it at the end of the day too. Simply start from your feet and work your way up the body in long sweeping strokes towards the heart. I add circular motions to the thighs and glutes, and you can also do the same in a clockwise rotation on your abdominal area.

You can certainly do your face and neck, but I usually skip those since I use my Mia 2 and don’t want to over-exfoliate. Some even use loofah gloves or washcloths to get the job done. If using a body brush, make sure that you wash it with warm water and let it air dry weekly to keep bacteria at bay.

Some precautions include:

• Avoiding sensitive skin, rashes, open wounds, varicose veins and/or inflamed skin

• Avoid using on sunburned skin

• Avoid using if you have enlarged lymph nodes

I notice a huge difference in my skin when I brush daily — my skin literally glows and is silky soft! Tell me if you body brush and why you love it. Happy brushing!
