Homework Part 2: Social Distancing Practice

Coach Wayne’s Corner

With social distancing being “in vogue” (aka a fact of life), we are all learning to be respectful of each other’s personal space.

With that said, even with our stay at home orders, it is recommended we get outside—while staying within our individual space—and get some exercise.

I like to take a bike ride every day. It’s good for my overall health and will help keep me in shape until I can get back out in the courts!

Beyond basic general physical conditioning, here is a creative, inventive, and fun way you can get outside, get some fresh air and sunshine, stay safe, and keep in shape and practice pickleball.

Set up zones and targets either in your yard or the swimming pool. Place the targets at a variety of different distances and locations which are approximately 30 to 40 feet away (aka the distance and depth of the service box). Be inventive and creative with what you use for targets—hula hoops, cardboard boxes, etc. I like to use plastic buckets and laundry baskets.

Practice serving balls at the targets.

Hitting into the grass or the water will prevent you from having to chase balls down the sidewalk like the ever-famous namesake of the sport “Pickles” the dog.

My final recommendation is that until we get back to a—what will ultimately be a new and different—regular way of life, we all need to be creative and adaptive with our daily schedule of life’s routines.

In the meantime, let’s all remain vigilant and strong in our attitude, respect each other’s personal space, and keep a good sense of humor during these times.
