Have You Thanked a Doctor Today?

To Your Health

B9-CBN-4-3-15-14On Monday, March 30, our nation, once again, celebrated National Doctors’ Day.

At Physicians Regional Healthcare System, we know the extraordinary role our local physicians play in our community. We witness their profound impact on a daily basis.

Here’s some history: the very first Doctor’s Day took place on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided we should set aside a day to honor physicians.

On March 30, 1958, a resolution Commemorating Doctors’ Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives.

In 1990, the House and Senate approved legislation to establish a national Doctors Day. On October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 designating March 30th as “National Doctors Day.”

When it comes to highly skilled physicians, Southwest Florida is truly blessed. As anyone who lives here knows, we have a significant number of medical practitioners and medical facilities.

Physicians Regional Healthcare System is lucky to be home to a large number of these skilled men and women; however, regardless of where they choose to practice, each of our local physicians is to be commended for their heroic efforts on behalf of our patient population.

Ask most any physician and he or she is likely to share that their decision to be part of the healthcare community is due to a “calling”—an emotional

response to an internal need to help others.

When a doctor is on the forefront of helping patients maintain an active, healthy lifestyle, their family members are the unsung heroes who generously build the support system that make the “caring” possible.

It truly takes a village.

All that said, a career in medicine is not for the faint of heart. It’s extremely hard work.

Like any profession, there are many choices for doctors as to where (and how) they choose to practice medicine. At Physicians Regional, we’re extremely fortunate—we have an exceptional team of doctors representing a variety of specialties who are employed by our hospital. Plus, we have an even larger group of affiliate members of our medical staff who have chosen Physicians Regional as their “home base” hospital.

I am extraordinarily proud to be associated with each and every doctor who passes through our doors to care for our patients who have so graciously trusted us with their care.

All of our communities’ doctors deserve our respect and admiration for their tireless efforts on our behalf—the sacrifices, the commitment, the compassion and the care.

As you cross paths with your doctor today, this week, or in the coming months, take a moment to thank them for all they do for you, your family, and our larger community.

While I work with and appreciate physicians each day in my role with Physicians Regional Healthcare System, I’m a patient too—and a grateful one at that.
